What does yellow mucus mean?
Yellow mucus typically indicates inflammation in your dog's lower intestinal tract or colon (colitis). The yellow color often comes from bile moving too quickly through the digestive system, combined with the colon producing extra mucus to soothe the irritation.
Is it an emergency?
If your dog is acting completely normal, has high energy, and is eating/drinking well, it is rarely an immediate emergency. However, if the yellow mucus is accompanied by lethargy, vomiting, loss of appetite, or large amounts of blood, you should contact a vet immediately.
What you can do at home
For mild cases where your dog is acting normal, a temporary bland diet can help soothe their stomach. Boiled white chicken (no bones or skin) and plain white rice in small, frequent meals is the standard approach. Ensure they have access to plenty of fresh water.
